Hughes Receives Heroism Award
Joseph "Chip" Hughes, director of the Worker Education and
Training Program at NIEHS, received the DHHS Secretary's
Recognition Award for Heroism, Exceptional/Volunteer Service at a
recent summit on terrorism in New York City. The award cited
Hughes' dedicated support of the health and safety of emergency
responders and remediation workers at the site of the World Trade
Center disaster. Immediately after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, he
began mobilizing program resources to provide whatever assistance
was necessary to make sure the safety and health of the work force
remained a high priority, according to the award citation. He
managed to get 3,000 respirators to the scene quickly and initiated
action to begin monitoring air quality in the area. Hughes also
diverted $440,000 to support programs at the site.
