Dr. George Counts and Don Poppke
The first NIH-wide Diversity Council recently elected Dr. George
Counts (r), director, Office of Research on Minority and Women's
Health, NIAID, and Don Poppke, executive officer, NLM, chair
and vice-chair, respectively. The council first convened Jan. 30,
1997, and meets monthly. It serves as an advisory body to the
Office of Equal Opportunity and reviews NIH-wide programs,
policies and procedures that may affect the diversity of the work

Dr. Norman B. Anderson
Dr. Norman B. Anderson, NIH associate director for behavioral
and social sciences research, was recently elected president of the
Society of Behavioral Medicine, a multidisciplinary, nonprofit,
professional organization regarded as the premier scientific
forum for the world's authorities on health and behavior. It was
founded in 1978 to promote interdisciplinary communication and
the integration of behavioral and biomedical approaches to health
and illness, and has more than 3,000 members. Anderson is a
fellow of SBM and has held many appointed and elected positions
within the organization since joining in 1979.
