Hackett Joins NIGMS
Dr. Rebecca H. Hackett recently joined NIGMS as scientific review
administrator in the Office of Scientific Review. She is a biochemist
whose independent research has been in the field of cytokine and
growth factor signaling. Previously, she was a senior staff fellow in
the division of cytokine biology at the Center for Biologics
Evaluation and Research, FDA. Hackett earned her undergraduate
degree in the biological sciences with a specialty in medical
technology from North Carolina State University, and her Ph.D. in
biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of
Connecticut Health Center in Farmington. She did postdoctoral
work in NCI's Laboratory of Biochemistry. At NIGMS, she will
work primarily on the review of applications to the Division of
Minority Opportunities in Research.
NIDCD Council Gains Five
Five new members were recently appointed to the National Deafness and Other Communication Disorders Advisory Council. They are: Dr. Rita S. Berndt, Dr. Bernard Cohen, Dr. Bernard A. Harris, Dr. Jacqueline E. Jones, and Donna L. Sorkin.
Berndt is professor, department of neuro-logy, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore.
Cohen is the Morris B. Bender professor in the department of neurology, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, City University of New York.
NIDCD director Dr. James F. Battey, Jr. (front, c) welcomes new members of the National Deafness and Other Communication Disorders Advisory Council, who include (front, from l) Dr. Jacqueline E. Jones, Donna Sorkin, and (back, from l) Drs. Rita S. Berndt, Bernard A. Harris and Bernard Cohen.
Harris, a former NASA astronaut, is vice president of Microgravity and Life Science, SPACEHAB, Inc., Temple, Tex., and clinical professor, department of internal medicine, University of Texas School of Medicine, Houston.
Jones is associate professor of clinical otolaryngo-logy at Cornell University Medical College, New York.
Sorkin is executive director, Self Help for Hard of Hearing People, Inc., in Bethesda.
