Dr. Sarah Sohraby recently joined NEI's Division of Intramural Research as deputy scientific director. She will monitor, coordinate and evaluate all aspects of NEI's intramural research efforts. She received her M.D. (magna cum laude) from Belgium's Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) Medical School in 1977. In Brussels, she completed her clinical fellowship training in internal medicine in 1980. From 1980 until 1983, she served as a Fogarty postdoctoral fellow at NIH in Dr. Maurice Burg's lab and, subsequently, at Harvard Medical School from 1984 to 1987 in Dr. Barry Brenner's lab. She received her Ph.D. in physiological sciences at ULB concurrent with her board certification in internal medicine. For the last 18 years, she has held research and teaching positions in Belgium both at the Medical and the Engineering School (ULB), and in the Congo at the Université de Lubumbashi's medical school. Sohraby has published in many scientific journals. She was the first to describe the direct measurement of single, amiloride-sensitive Na⁺ channels, after incorporation of purified kidney epithelial cell apical membranes in planar lipid bilayers. Her studies also indicated that the effect of aldosterone on kidney Na⁺ transport was related to methylation at the membrane level.
